In a tree,
raising its upturned leaves
as if they were completely weightless,
was a single-minded face composed
partly of branches,
but mostly of thousands
and thousands of
slender twigs.

Its gaze,
like a man astounded
by unfurling sails,
remained fixed on the heavens.

This held the leaves up
and made them grow.
